Patrick Abernethy, D.V.M.

Dr. Abernethy has been a familiar face to clients at Dominion Equine Clinic since 2003.  Patrick is a native of Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he graduated as valedictorian from Fort Defiance High School.  Upon graduation, Dr. Abernethy attended Virginia Polytechnic and State University, where he graduated with honors.  He attained his undergraduate degree in Animal and Poultry Scinces/Biotechnology/Preveterinary in 1999.  Patrick attended Ross University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and completed his clinical rotation at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.  Dr. Abernethy graduated in the top ten percent of his class and received the “Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Proficiency Award” from the University of Georgia.  After graduation in 2001, Patrick completed an internship at the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine, which focused in many different fields, including ruminant health, camelid medicine, small ruminant medicine, and equine dentistry.  He also completed two brief clinical externships in Harrisonburg, Virginia and Okeechobee, Florida.

Dr. Abernethy’s interests in horses and veterinary medicine are broad.  He has a special interest in equine dentistry.  He is a past member of the American Veterinary Dental Society and has attended 100+ hours of continuing education involving equine dentistry alone.  He has also attended previous AVDS conventions.  He also participated in several symposiums regarding equine dentistry, in the states of Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.  Dr. Abernethy feels it is important to keep current with modern equine dentistry and enjoys the broad scope that the equine dentistry field has to offer.  Patrick holds licenses in the states of Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.  He maintains memberships with several state and national organizations including: VVMA, AVMA, VAEP, AAEP, and FAEP, to name a few.

Dr. Abernethy currently lives in Virginia Beach, with his lovely wife Amanda and their two dogs.   Amanda owns and manages a boarding/training/show barn at their home.  Dr. Abernethy enjoys outdoor sports and restoring antique tractors.  Dr. Abernethy also enjoys collecting antiques and loves Civil War History.   Dr. Abernethy continues to enjoy working for Dominion Equine Clinic, whose practice is broad spectrum and multi-species oriented.
