DR. JOHN GREW UP IN MASSACHUSETTS. HE COMPLETED HIS UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AT WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY IN 1975 AND RECEIVED HIS VETERINARY DEGREE FROM THE THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY IN 1979. HE THEN WORKED FOR URBANA VETERINARY HOSPITAL IN URBANA, OHIO FOR FIVE YEARS.

DR. JOHN MET HIS WIFE SUSAN WHILE IN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL AND THEY MARRIED IN 1979. THEY HAVE FOUR CHILDREN WHO ALL GRADUATED FROM VIRGINIA TECH, AND WHO ARE SUCCESSFULLY PURSUING EXCITING CAREERS IN VARIOUS HEALTH SCIENCE AND MASS COMMUNICATION FIELDS.

DR. JOHN IS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING A SERVICE-ORIENTED, BROAD-BASED EQUINE VETERINARY PRACTICE. HE ATTENDS MANY CONTINUING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO BRING HIS EQUINE COMMUNITY THE MOST CURRENT INFORMATION AND SKILLS. HE IS A MEMBER OF ISLEP (INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF LOCOMOTOR EQUINE PATHOLOGY) AND IS CURRENTLY COMPLETING A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM (EIGHT MODULES) OF ADVANCED EDUCATION IN THE FIELD OF EQUINE LAMENESS AND OSTEOARTICULAR, MUSCULOTENDINOUS, AND NERVOUS PATHOLOGY COVERING THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM OF THE HORSE.

HIS OTHER MEMBERSHIPS INCLUDE THE AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AVMA), THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF EQUINE PRACTITIONERS (AAEP), AND THE ASSOCIATION OF ZOOLOGICAL VETERINARIANS (AAZV). HE SERVES ON THE BOARDS OF THE COROLLA WILD HORSE FUND AND EQUI-KIDS THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTRE.

DR. JOHN’S INTERESTs INCLUDE SPENDING TIME WITH HIS FAMILY, WATCHING SPORTS (ESPECIALLY HOCKEY AND BASEBALL), GARDENING, LANDSCAPING, AND FISHING.

DR. RIEGER IS FROM KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.  SHE HAS HAD A LIFETIME OF GENERAL EQUINE EXPERIENCE THROUGH OWNING AND COMPETING WITH HER OWN HORSE.  SHE STARTED RIDING HUNTER/JUMPER AT AGE SEVEN BUT IN HIGH SCHOOL, SHE WENT TO ROLEX AT THE KENTUCKY HORSE PARK AND CAUGHT THE “THREE-DAY EVENTING” BUG SO SHE AND HER HORSE, SMOKE, CHANGED DISCIPLINES UNTIL COLLEGE. 

DR. RIEGER WENT TO BERRY COLLEGE ON SCHOLARSHIP TO RIDE FOR THE IHSA HUNT SEAT TEAM. THE TEAM PLACED IN THE TOP 10 AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL TWO YEARS IN A ROW. SHE WAS A CAPTAIN OF THE TEAM FOR THREE YEARS AND KEPT THE TEAM INVOLVED WITH GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY ALSO BEING PRESIDENT OF THE COMMUNITY SERVICE GROUP ON CAMPUS. WHILE AT BERRY COLLEGE, SHE STUDIED ADVANCED PHYSIOLOGY AND EXERCISE SCIENCE IN ADDITION TO COMPLETING HER BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN ANIMAL SCIENCE.

DR. RIEGER THEN CONTINUED ON TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE.  SHE WAS GLAD TO BE BACK IN BIG ORANGE COUNTRY AND DIDN’T MISS A COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME THAT FIRST YEAR BACK.  SHE RECEIVED HER DOCTOR OF VETERINARY MEDICINE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AND ELECTED TO DO AN INTERNSHIP WITH MANOR EQUINE HOSPITAL.  SHE DEVELOPED STRONG SKILLS IN DISTAL LIMB ULTRASOUND, SPORTS MEDICINE, ANESTHESIA AND SURGERY. 

SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT HORSES AND IS THRILLED TO BE IN A CAREER WHERE SHE CAN PURSUE HER INTERESTS IN GENERAL EQUINE WELLNESS, REPRODUCTION, SPORTS MEDICINE AND SURGERY.
